Arthur Foote’s beautiful A Night Piece was originally written for solo flute and string quartet, with a version for flute and string orchestra, and is filled with the kind of rich, complex inner lines and shifting textures that make the accompaniment as rewarding as the solo part itself.

In this new arrangement for solo flute, ensemble flute, two alto flutes, two bass flutes and contrabass flute, those string textures are reimagined through the extraordinary colours and depth of the low flute family. The result is a wonderfully warm and resonant sound world, supporting a gorgeous solo flute line that soars effortlessly above the ensemble.

This arrangement was commissioned by Steven Finley for his Tribute Concert at the 2026 National Flute Association Convention, celebrating his receipt of the NFA Lifetime Achievement Award.
