the flutewise theme!

the story behind the piece...

Gareth has been doing flute days, masterclasses and flute events for quite a few years now, and had previously relied on the compositions of (his old teacher from Guildhall, and good friend) Ian Clarke to supply the music on which to base his workshops.

Gareth had been arranging music for the best part of 15 years, including works for Flute Ensemble, but it was the Flutewise Academy of August 2010 that inspired him to get his composing hat on and write an original work.

Gareth based the parts on the tried and tested Ian Clarke progression - making less difficult parts for less experienced players, and grading the difficulty of the parts right up to post grade 8 level.

Gareth also followed in the footsteps of Ian Clarke by including quite a few extended techniques in the piece.

The YouTube video directly below is the performance of "The Flutewise Theme" at the Flutewise Academy 2011 at the Purcell School.

And the video at the bottom of the page is a tutorial on the extended techniques used in the piece!
